NSLA History & Board

NSLA History

NSLA was founded as an umbrella organization for abstinence 12 Step based sober living homes and regional sober living associations within the United States. It was formed to support independently operated sober living homes and regional sober living associations, as well as to provide information, training, mentorship, networking, quality assurance and to establish professional and ethical standards.

NSLA provides sober living homes with membership criteria, codes of ethics and acceptance guidelines. The NSLA administers the assessment programs/inspections that ensure each member home meets health, safety, cleanliness, management and ethical guidelines. The NSLA provides an annual conference, quarterly training, workshops and e-newsletters to the members in regards to regulatory, addiction, alcoholism, recovery, housing and other developments that impact operations.

The NSLA membership provides a repository of valuable expertise, which forms the basis for training and workshops on sober living management available to members. The NSLA also serves as an information clearinghouse on matters of importance to the sober living community and is a resource in the regulatory and legislative arena as well on matters from zoning ordinances and state and federal regulations. Board members are often called upon to give testimony, meet with government officials and provide other assistance.

The NSLA is engaged in increasing the public’s understanding of the need for quality sober living services, and the value of these services to the community at large. Sober living is both effective and cost-beneficial in helping people achieve long-term recovery; yet funding for sober living by health insurers, by state and local governments and by social service agencies is virtually nonexistent. Achieving an increased public awareness and understanding is a necessary step toward attracting the resources needed to provide quality sober living opportunities to all who need them.

In addition to sober living homes, NSLA supports community-based recovery efforts and support services.
